Aloha Parent and Guardians,

Fall Parent Nights Reinvented and Not To Be Missed. Mark Your Calendars!
About this time every year, we host several parent meetings, usually one night for each grade level. The fact is, this year there is so much information to share that we have to make some changes. And we think it’s a good thing. This year we will have two fall parent nights, one geared for parents/guardians of underclassmen, and a second one JUST for parents of seniors. The fact is, everyone’s time is valuable. We realize it’s a challenge to attend the many annual events that fill the back to school calendar, so this year we are combing efforts hosting our first parent information night jointly with the PTSA’s annual Back to school BBQ.  Please below for details...

Tuesday September 14th: Back-2-School Parent Information Fair & BBQ -5-7:30 @ Cafeteria
First of all - ALL Parents are welcome as this is THE PTSA Annual BBQ, but just to be clear, some of the information available this night is geared especially for you- to help you help your teen navigate their 9th, 10th and 11th grade years.

We will meet in the cafeteria where the different interests and organizations will have information booths where you can browse and gather information at your own pace for as long as you want- whatever suits you. Just stop by for a quick look- see what’s new OR get your questions answered, network and share info with fellow parents, and stay for dinner. Robert Perdue, this year’s PTSA President, along with his officers and other volunteers, returns as grill master for the annual BBQ dinner. It will run from 5pm to 7pm so you can swing by on your way home, or come after dinner if you prefer. Come browse, find out what’s going on, or find answers to those stewing questions you have about  Kapaa High.

There will be information on academics, college and career planning, athletics, student clubs, help on how to stay informed and connect to your teens’ teachers/homework, info on PTSA, Project Grad and last but not least, an introduction/unveiling of the Smaller Learning Communities we are envisioning for the near future here at Kapaa High. We have just finished a grant application for $1.5 M that would go a long way towards this initiative.
We are moving forward with this whether we win the grant or not, and we would love to hear your input on how to  evolve and improve the quality of education at Kapaa High.  Tuesday Sept. 14, Cafeteria, 5 - 7:30 pm.

Tuesday September 21st: SENIOR PARENT Information Pow Wow, 6:30 in the Library.
Senior year is quite a different thing altogether and we believe we still need a special night to cover all the different topics and areas of concern and interest that Seniors and their parents and guardians have. All the areas will be covered from academics, graduation/diploma info, senior contracts, athletics, scholarships, SATs, college applications, upcoming FAFSA meeting info, Project Grad...and so on. PTSA can’t do a second BBQ, but nonetheless, our PTSA / Project Grad will be cosponsoring the event and there will be plenty of ono offerings and refreshments.Tuesday Sept. 21, Library, 6:30 pm.

NEW! Parent Teacher Conference Time Slots:  1st Wednesday Afternoon of Every Month!
Many Warrior parents ask about Parent Teacher Conferences here at Kapaa High. This year, Teachers have reserved time on the 1st Wednesday of every month to meet with parents and guardians. Period. You can count on it. Appointments are required. Parents/guardians should either call, email or leave a note in teachers’ mailboxes to make appointments. Please refer to the Kapaa HS 2010-11 Directory where you can find teachers’ phone numbers, email addresses, classroom numbers, and when they have their prep period if you’d like to talk to them ahead of time. Available in hard copy at the front office, or online.

School-Home Packet Due Please ‘Sign, Seal & Deliver’
You should have gotten the “Kapaa High School, School-Home Information” Packet by now. If you haven’t please ask your teen. It has a yellow cover page. Each student needs to return their completed packet to their 1st period teacher ASAP. If you have questions, or have not received one please call Janis Gowan: 822-4386 x 219.

VPs’ & Counselors’ Advice for Seniors & Parents

3. The online scholarship database: We have not received any updated deadline dates for scholarships for this school year, so far. For those wanting to start working on this, please refer to last years’ online calendar for rough dates. Scholarship entries will be entered into the 2010 online calendar as 2010 due dates are confirmed- so visit often. See the links on the Kapaa High home page.

Everyone’s Doing It! Volunteer Opportunities @ KHS
The number of volunteers in schools and communities is up nationwide. Here are ways you can make a difference here:
1) School Marquee Lighting Project: We are looking for a licensed contractor to help us wire our existing school marquee. Solar or hard wired. If you can help, please contact Mr. Youn, Principal. 821-4400.
2) Team member for the I-102 Lab Rehab: I-102 is one of our heavily used computer labs. It is used for classes and for after school tutoring. A handful of people have organized to do a once-over to go through some cabinets and do some detailing/deep cleaning, etc at the end of September. The floors are scheduled to be waxed and polished over the fall break, so we want to get this part of the project done ahead of that.
No ladder work or heavy lifting. Contact: margaret_goode@notes.k12.hi.us. Or 808.821-4401, x233.
3) Campus Beautification: Looking for someone to co-rally the troops. On-campus support and funding already lined-up.

RESPECT Your Campus: Request to All Teams, Clubs, Faculty & Staff- Posting of Flyers
Two new bulletin boards (R and I buildings) are up on campus where flyers for your team, club or class events can be posted. Taping flyers on the walls damages the walls and negatively affects our school environment. Please adjust              .-Mahalo, Suwella Esteban & The Custodial Department.

Great Volunteer Work Already Done This Year
As if there isn’t enough news in this issue, we just couldn’t NOT acknowledge these amazing efforts. First, the Student Center got a beautiful paint job this July thanks to the leadership efforts of Eagle Scout Anthony Lopez and dozens of Lihue Boys Scouts. Mahalo to Mr. Fujimoto for the feature in TGI! Secondly, proving that even just a few helping hands can make a difference, Debbie Wilson and Denise Fuerte lent muscle and brain power to help Tech Coordinator Mike Maddock gather and palletize old computers and other e-waste. This green effort rid the campus of probably tons of e-waste. 9.5 pallets full to be exact.
Cosponsored by Cost-U-Less (Thanks Sherri Moniz!), Apple and FedEx, all of the waste will be recycled at no cost to Kapaa High- preventing lead, mercury, copper and lots of plastic and glass from ending up in our Kekaha landfill and in the ocean. Finally: Mahalo to New Hope Church for the Fall Campus Cleanup again this year.

Try a New Way, Fall Parent Project Training
To our Warrior Ohana: You are invited to Fall Parent Project Training. This training provides parents specific, no-nonsense solutions to the problems that they face today. It offers practical and emotional support to parents empowering positive transformation. It will take place at our Student Center starting Wed. Parent Project training is endorsed and in use nation-wide by community leaders, religious leaders, and private and public schools. The cost of this training is $150 for adults and $75 for teens. There is a materials fee for the personal handbook, full scholarships available. Please take this opportunity to learn proven methods to empower yourself and your teens. Call if you have questions, or to reserve your spot. Please call soon so we can make arrangements and secure scholarships as needed. 821-4401. x233 by September 15th, 2010.
